Writing From Factor X

A Carnival of Aces: Masterpost

This blog carnival is an effort to encourage a variety of different voices to speak about asexuality from their own perspectives. Anyone can participate, but the responses should deal with asexuality or the asexual spectrum (grey-As, demisexuals) in some way. They should also relate in some way to the theme of each round of the carnival, which will change from month to month and will be chosen by the person hosting the carnival for that month.

The scope of this project is general–any post dealing with both asexuality and the theme of the carnival is welcome. Alternate forms of media are also welcome as long as they deal with the prompt! If you’re not sure whether your piece is okay, submit it anyway and we’ll figure it out.

What is a blog carnival?

A blog carnival is an event in which various people write posts around a single topic. These posts are then collected at the end of the carnival and linked together by the carnival’s host.

How can I submit a piece for the carnival?

Instructions for submitting pieces for the carnival are on each month’s call for participation post. The current one is here, and the current topic is gender.

What does it take to host the carnival?

You need to have your own blog, first. The person hosting each round of the carnival chooses the theme that that round revolves around, so by the time your round comes up it’s good to have a theme in mind.

How can I volunteer to be a carnival host?

You can sign up to host a future round of the carnival by commenting on this post with the month you wish to host and the blog you’ll be hosting from. You do not need to have a theme until the start of your round.

Alternatively, you can email me at sciatrix@gmail.com to see about hosting a round of the carnival and to be added to the list.

Where will future carnivals be hosted?

No one has currently volunteered to host one for the near future.

Where have past carnivals been?

  1. I’d like to host a round – let me know which month is open!

    Comment by maddox — April 29, 2011 @ 3:30 pm | Reply

    • Awesome, I’ll put you down for July 1-August 1!

      Comment by Sciatrix — May 1, 2011 @ 11:18 am | Reply

  2. So, when should I announce the theme for June?

    Comment by Ily — April 29, 2011 @ 11:39 pm | Reply

    • I think the earlier the better once the carnival has moved to you–that gives people more time to write prompts.

      Comment by Sciatrix — May 1, 2011 @ 11:17 am | Reply

      • Okay, thanks, so I’ll post something in the next few days. 🙂

        Comment by Ily — May 1, 2011 @ 11:47 pm | Reply

        • Also, do you mind if I use your Call for Participation? (With different details, of course…)

          Comment by Ily — May 2, 2011 @ 1:31 am | Reply

          • No, go ahead! There’s really no reason to rewrite it.

            Comment by Sciatrix — May 2, 2011 @ 8:55 am | Reply

  3. I think you should add another question to your FAQ: How do I submit an article? You need to link to the latest call for participation.

BTW, both you and Ily offered to host articles on your own blogs for people who don’t want to put it on their own blogs or don’t have their own blogs. I’m unwilling to do this when it’s my turn. Do you think this is a problem, and should I offer some alternative?

    Comment by Siggy — May 20, 2011 @ 3:24 pm | Reply

    • Done! That’s a good point–I meant to fix it a while back but got distracted between my computer issues and my finals.

I don’t think that’s a problem, and I don’t think that offering to host guest posts should be a requirement of being willing to host. I’m still willing to do that whether or not it’s my turn to host or not, so feel free to put a note to that effect pointing people in my direction if you want. Or you could just not offer to do it. Either way seems fine to me.

  4. I would like to sign up for a month (hosted at my WordPress). 🙂 Is the one just after Maddox’s open?

  5. Can I sign up for January, over at Confessions of an Ist? (I’m hoping January would work best with my school schedule; however, I may need to switch to a later month. If I do, I should know by September or October.)

    Comment by Aydan — June 3, 2011 @ 11:54 am | Reply

    • That is indeed fine! Just make sure you let me know if it turns out it’s not going to work out. 🙂

  6. You can sign me up for hosting any of the unclaimed months. It’ll be at my dreamwidth though. http://norah-liath.dreamwidth.org/
Bit surprised to see January 2011 in there 😀

    Comment by Norah — June 7, 2011 @ 5:35 pm | Reply

    • …..and that is what I get for not checking my dates, aaaagh. Thanks for pointing it out!

I’ve put you up for September 1st-October 1st, then!

      Comment by Sciatrix — June 7, 2011 @ 6:24 pm | Reply

      • Ok, so when it says October (combined with the info in your reply), that means that round will run through September, and the round-up post should be coming out on October 1, did I get that right?
(This is hard, I need to verify :D)

        Comment by Norah — June 8, 2011 @ 4:16 am | Reply

        • That is totally correct! And yeah, I noticed later on I needed to be clearer about that. I might tinker with the masterpost to clarify later on this week.

    • So sorry to get back to you so late! (I’ve been busy busy busy aaaaaaaagh lately and finding it hard to get back to *anyone* on the Internet.)

I will put you down for February, then! And if Aydan says they’ve got a problem with January, I’ll send you an email. Have updated the Masterpost, too.

    • Hey, would you be willing to host from November 1 to December 1? Meike, who was down to host, says they’ve got school issues.

I apologize for the short notice! If you can’t, I’ll do it, but I’m seriously swamped with work at the moment.

      Comment by Sciatrix — October 16, 2011 @ 1:34 pm | Reply

      • Yeah, I can do it. I’ll probably have to post the round-up on December 2nd instead of December 1st because of school, but I can do it, no problem. Also, I might shoot you an email; I’ve got two possible themes in mind, and I can’t decide between them.

        Comment by Emily — October 17, 2011 @ 9:59 am | Reply

        • Awesome, thank you so much! And no problem on posting the round-up slightly late, I don’t think anyone will mind.

  17. Do we really not have another volunteer for next month? I thought we were good until like May or something. Well, I’ll think of something and host it unless someone else beats me to commenting here.

    Comment by Elizabeth — February 3, 2012 @ 11:05 pm | Reply

    • Yeaaaah, we’re pretty empty, probably because word hasn’t been going around. If you could host it, that would be great–I’m really busy at the moment with interviews–and if no one else wants it after that I’ll pick it up and take a month for myself.

      Comment by Sciatrix — February 4, 2012 @ 12:17 am | Reply

      • It’s probably going to be a while again before I can reliably put out posts, but I should be able to host after March or April. So if you want you can put me down for any month after that, with possibly the exception of July.

        Comment by Norah — February 4, 2012 @ 10:34 am | Reply

        • That would be awesome! Would May 1 to June 1 work for you?

  21. Uh, is it really rude to say that this post is kind of… unsettling? It seems to be a full copy of Kaz’s post from Feministe (which always seems wrong to me to begin with, though the intro still says Kaz wrote it basically, there does not seem to be any info about reblogging this from Feministe anywhere there), translated from English to something else and then back to English, which makes a lot of the wording (near-)incomprehensible, and it also now says ‘chaste’ everywhere instead of asexual?

    Comment by Norah — February 8, 2012 @ 3:33 pm | Reply

    • ….holy crap, I hadn’t even processed that, just let the pingback through. Deleted, and I’ve let Kaz know about it.

  24. >_>
    I made the stupidest mistake.
I knew I had June, but my head turned it around again and for some reason I wound up thinking that meant the month June-July, when it should have been May-June.

    I’m so sorry.

(Extra stupid because for my first round hosting, last time, I even verified this stuff in advance so I wouldn’t do this…)

I was just checking here to make sure I hadn’t picked a topic that had been used before, and was going to make the call for participation post after that. *sighs*

    Comment by Norah — June 4, 2012 @ 2:13 pm | Reply

    • Oh, seriously, don’t worry about it. Actually, this is a good reminder for me to update the masterpost… oops. *wince*

  25. Hey sciatrix,

Would “compulsory sexuality” be an ok topic for this month’s carnival? In a really broad sense, I thought it would be cool to look at people’s experiences with the way that sex is foregrounded in society, or the way that romantic relationships are foregrounded over platonic relationships, or feelings of pressure to have a more “socially acceptable” stance on relationships, sex and sexuality.

I want to post a call for submissions soon, so if you could get back to me that would be great 🙂 Can I also include a round up of posts that aren’t written for the monthly theme?

    Comment by Jo — June 6, 2012 @ 2:20 am | Reply

    • That topic is fine! And yeah, sure, that should work just fine, especially given that the carnival is partly supposed to serve as a repository of writing on the subject.
